A Roadmap for Transformative Change: Canada’s Black Justice Strategy

July 4, 2024

The Department of Justice Canada has released the report of the Steering Group for Canada’s Black Justice Strategy. The report, called “A Roadmap for Transformative Change: Canada’s Black Justice Strategy,” is the culmination of engagements and consultations last fall with Black communities across Canada.

Outlined in this transformative report are 114 recommendations for combating the anti-Black racism and systemic discrimination that has led to the overrepresentation of Black people in the criminal justice system, including as victims of crime.

Truly Alive Youth and Family Foundation (TAYFFI) in Saskatoon is one of the 12 Black-led community organizations included in Canada’s Black Justice Strategy. Because of TAYFFI’s advocacy, the voices, views and perspectives of Saskatchewan’s Black communities have been included in this historic strategy. Legal Aid Saskatchewan welcomes this report and its recommendations. TAYFFI is one of our organization’s valuable community partners, and we look forward to bringing into our work the principles of Sankofa (a Ghanaian concept of retrieving things of value from our knowledge of the past) alongside our commitment to the principles of reconciliation.
