Two LAS Lawyers Paddle into First Place

August 28, 2024

It was a last-minute decision for Tyler Joorisity and Sukhchain Singh to enter the Eagle Point Classic canoe race, and it ended in victory!

Joorisity and Singh joined the Pimiskatan-La Ronge Canoe Club this season to not only take advantage of the access to northern Saskatchewan’s waterways, but as a fun way to connect with nature and unwind from their busy schedules as legal aid lawyers in the Northern Area Office. Joorisity also points out that “Judge Layton – former LAS lawyer – practically ordered us to join the club!”

The 30th Annual Eagle Point Classic Canoe Race took place last weekend in La Ronge and featured a 17.75-kilometre route – congratulations to the winning team, Lori Mack and Trevor Robinson, for their first-place finish of one hour, 47 minutes and 16 seconds – and a seven kilometre sprint. Joorisity and Singh competed against five other teams in this shorter race to place first with a time of 49 minutes and nine seconds!

Judge Forester (also a former Legal Aid Saskatchewan staff lawyer) and Morgan Layton placed second with a time of 55 minutes and 48 seconds, and Catriona Kaiser-Derrick and Brady Knight (both former LAS staff lawyers, as well!) took third place with a time of 59 minutes and 48 seconds.

When asked about plans for next year, Joorisity says they’ll consider the longer route now that they’ve conquered the shorter distance. Singh adds, “It is my dream to see all Legal Aid Saskatchewan lawyers participating in this race!”
