Student Meet and Greet a Success

Legal Aid Saskatchewan recently hosted a meet and greet with University of Saskatchewan law students. More than two dozen young professionals gathered at Head Office to learn more about what LAS does and ask questions about the articling, summer student, and rural externship programs.

“The students were very enthusiastic and asking good questions, including how LAS deals with work/life balance, whether they would get a chance to go up north, and about our work with Indigenous issues and newcomers to Canada,” says Joanne Khan, Practice Management Counsel.

Several former and current students with LAS spoke about their terms in the summer, articling, and rural externship programs. “Their comments were so positive and uplifting,” says Khan. “They expressed that the opportunity to spend time with Legal Aid Saskatchewan was one that couldn’t be experienced elsewhere, with so many extensive and unique experiences travelling around the province to circuit courts, experiencing flying up north, stimulating criminal and family matters with many opportunities to work with clients, and experience speaking to matters in court.”

One of the students’ key messages was praising the mentorship their Legal Directors provide, as well as the encouragement and guidance from other staff in their offices during their terms. Khan notes, “We are seeing that more students are wanting to work with Legal Aid Saskatchewan, first in our student programs and then as staff lawyers. We have also had very positive outcomes with our students in the rural externship program, as one of them is going to be articling and the other will be a summer student this year.”
